There are many types of great people. Hitler was a great man, but he wasn’t a good man. Stalin was a great man but he wasn’t good either. So the definition of great definitely depends on who and what you were talking about. Great is not always good, but good can be great, and great can be good. It’s rather like the idea of hate.In today’s world we are trained to think that hate is bad period. What is it it?Is cancer something you should hate? Is child abuse is something you should hate? Of course. So when we are talking about great people we need to really think carefully about who we are talking about.
For instance – there is no doubt that Billy Graham was a great – great man, but many people would question his flavour off faith – or specific doctrines he espoused as being good bad or indifferent. Vladimir Putin is indeed a great great man. There is no doubt the lead of Russia is a strong man, with a strong iron-like will, and there is absolutely no doubt he has strong leadership skills, but could you trust this man not to take your life if you went against him? Apart from the obvious fact I do not know this man’s heart – I’m not sure I could.
Sure – so great men and women are everywhere – and they are deemed great for 101 different reasons – good and bad, notorious and otherwise. In today’s world many people give their life to becoming great in the eyes of other people – a futile pursuit I would assert. Jesus Christ said we need to concentrate on becoming smaller, and magnifying God – not becoming great ourselves.
In my opinion truly great people are those who do not seek greatness but become great through their deeds words actions and lifestyle. Let’s seek to become great in the eyes of God – not in the eyes of man. We should make it our live’s work to find out what great in the eyes of God really means, and put all our heart and soul into this pursuit. This is true wisdom. Then there will definitely be rewards in heaven even if our time on earth is not as comfortable as we would like.
